The between needles are ideal for quilting, a technique associated with patchwork. They will make padding work easier for you, amongst other things. The needle does not have to be long, as the technique is not the same as with a standard stitch: the needle is pushed horizontally into the fabric with very little space between the stitches. They are generally used on 100% patchwork cotton, but can be used on all fabrics by adapting the needle number. They are usually used with a quilting yarn (more resistant than a traditional yarn).
